The Dead Daisies performed in Los Angeles on 8/25/2017 as part of their “Dirty Dozen US Tour”8/26/2017 The Dead Daisies are coming off an early summer tour that saw them playing in Europe. What has been dubbed as “The Dirty Dozen Tour”, it has played to selected US cities. On this night it hit the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles. The group has been playing clubs and theaters in August in support of their new live album “Live & Louder”. It was released on May 19th, 2017 to fantastic reviews. (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/live-louder-live-version/id1219352423) The current lineup (John Corabi on vocals, Doug Aldrich on lead guitar, Brian Tichy on drums, Marco Mendoza on bass and David Lowy on rhythm guitar. They are an exceptionally talented group of musicians. They bring the fun back to rock and roll with their crowd interaction. Singer John Corabi works the crowd with his joke cracking and continued encouragement for audience participation. The set started off with “Long Way to Go”. From then the band moved through “Mexico”, “Make Some Noise” and “Song and a Prayer”. Several other songs included their take on some classic covers like “Fortunate Son”, “Join Together” and “Helter Skelter”. Brian Tichy performed a kick ass drum solo following “Last Time I Saw the Sun”, which was reminiscent of those performed by some 1970’s era arena rock bands. Following the main set the band returned for an encore of a song they recently released video, “We’re An American Band”. “Midnight Moses” concluded what was an amazing night of pure rock and roll. If you know anyone who continues to communicate the phrase “Rock is Dead”, I fully recommend you to take that person them to a Dead Daisies concert. I guarantee they will have second thoughts about uttering those words for a long time. 'On August 12th we were on hand for the opening night of the Spend the Night with Alice Cooper co-headline tour with rock legends Deep Purple. It took place at The Chelsea Event Center at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, NV.
Alice Cooper is so much more than just an awesome rock concert; it's a fantastic theatrical show as well. He still controls the stage like it was 1973. Backed by an incredible band, Alice's voice and his theatrics push the evening’s show to its full potential. Having three phenomenal guitar players (Ryan Roxie, Nita Strauss and Tommy Henriksen) allow for a multi layered sound to recreate the original studio tracks flawlessly. He also has one of the best rhythm sections in rock with Chuck Garric (bass) andGlen Sobel (drums). Opening the show was “Brutal Planet”, and then came a barrage of non-stop hits like "No More Mr. Nice Guy", "Poison", "Only Women Bleed" as well as many of his classics like "Billion Dollar Babies", "Under My Wheels" and “Cold Ethyl”. New music included the song “Paranoiac Personality” from the newly released CD entitled “Paranormal” which includes appearances by his original Alice Cooper band mates. The album can be purchased here:https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/paranormal/id1245405140 He's such a consummate showman with a flair for the theatrical that it makes it hard to be let down. I've convinced people who weren't fans to go see him and they walked away amazed and surprised at how great the show truly is. "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy" (The Electric Drill Song) and the furious "American Beauty" set the tone for the evening.
The great thing with Mr. Big is the fact that all their musicians are the best of the best and they don't have any ego problems. They come to the stage with the mind set of making music and having fun together. Highly skilled musicians that play together as one unit - that's Mr. Big and it's highly entertaining. There is so much ease in the way they play live. Of course they have their songs, but there is still so much room for improvisation in their live music that makes it so exciting to see their shows. On drums in from the beginning was hard hitting LA based drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley/Burning Rain) who took the place behind the drum kit. Pat Torpey their powerhouse drummer has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease joined the show and appeared to be enjoying it immensely. It also shows one thing that the band takes care of their band mates. Respect is the one word that comes to mind. Eric Martin is still one of the most amazing vocalists of his generation and it shows on their dominant performance of the Cat Stevens classic “Wild World”. Following a killer rendition of “Green-Tinted Sixties Mind”, they gave us a new tune, “Everybody Needs a Little Trouble” from the forthcoming “Defying Gravity” CD which is slated for release in July. “Price You Gotta Pay” from the 1993 release “Bump Ahead” was followed by a spectacular guitar solo from the amazing Paul Gilbert. Billy Sheehan, for those who don’t know, is one of the most assertively innovative bassists on the planet. He has a lightning fast set of fingers and an unmistakable forceful tone. Needless to say, he is one of rock’s most important bassists ever. So, with all these accolades you can imagine that a solo from the man himself would be nothing short of spectacular. It leads into "Addicted to That Rush" which finished out the main set this evening. A four song encore then ensued and not only did we get their most recognizable hit “To Be With You” we were also treated with the just released single “1992”. They ended the night with their take on the classic Who song “Baba O’Riley”. The Mr. Big Defying Gravity Tour picks back up in August with a two week stint in South America followed by some dates in Japan. The 5 piece UK band put on a stellar, fun-filled show. For ninety plus minutes, Joe Elliot (vocals), Phil Collen (guitar), Vivian Campbell (guitar), Rick Savage (bass) and Rick Allen (drums) brought out 35 plus years of tunes. Playing in front of a huge electronic screen, the band cruised through 17 songs. Included in the set were songs from 1981’s High 'n' Dry album ("Let It Go,” "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" and “Switch 625”) and three from their 2015 self-titled album release (Show opener "Let's Go," “Dangerous” and "Man Enough".) Guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell traded stunning solos all night. Joe Elliott can still hit most of his notes, and the rhythm section of drummer Rick Allen and bassist Rick Savage are both fine showmen. Their four-part harmonies remain a potent weapon as well. The crowd reacted most excitedly to Def Leppard standards like “Armageddon It,” "Foolin'," "Love Bites" and the set-closing duo of "Let's Get Rocked" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me." They ended the festivities with the encore of "Rock of Ages" and "Photograph". Supporting Def Leppard were veteran glam rockers Poison. They worked in most of their hair band-hits that included “Talk Dirty to Me,” “Fallen Angel” and “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”. Guitarist C.C. DeVille cruised around the stage and could not have looked happier. Bret Michaels could be seen shaking hands with the front row rockers in between singing. Bassist Bobby Doll and a fired up Rikki Rockett kept the ball rolling going with their rock solid rhythm section. Show opener Tesla was on point with their seven-song set. Listening to songs like "Edison’s Medicine" and "Modern Day Cowboy" was a sufficient reminder that Tesla had ruled the charts for a few years. The band was all business for this show. The night was filled with a sense of fresh enthusiasm. The powerhouse vocals by Seana were spot on. Guitar shredding 101 was provided by Strauss and Papastavrou. The duo was augmented by classically trained keyboardist Scarlett. The rhythm section of Vigil and Martin provide a formidable backing to help bring the songs to life When asked by AXS.com about how the band got its start Nita said “I’ve wanted to start this band since I started playing guitar. Right away I saw a lack of serious musicianship represented in the majority of mainstream all female bands, and I always wanted to change that. So I started writing music with this project in mind in February of 2016, and shortly after started seeking out musicians in LA to be a part of it.” Nicole recently told Guitar World when asked about their sound, “I’d say it is super melodic metal but also has a little bit of something for everyone. We wanted to broaden our audience not do anything too aggressive, but there’s still a little bit of heaviness in there.” The band was all business for this show. It drew many devoted friends and fans of the rocker who was the singer for Dio, Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Elf.
Musicians Sean McNabb (Lynch Mob), Lita Ford and Gilby Clarke (Guns N Roses) were some of the riders, who joined Wendy Dio to help raise money for cancer research in the name of Ronnie James Dio. The ride began at Harley Davidson of Glendale and rolled through the streets of Los Angeles County to it final stop at Los Encinos State Park. There were many on hand to celebrate his legacy with music. Live entertainment in the park was provided by rockers LYNCH MOB, DIO DISCIPLES, STEVEN ADLER’S ALL STARS, ROUGH CUTT, EDDIE MONEY, THE LOVELESS, SONIA HARLEY and NO SMALL CHILDREN. A definite highlight of the concert was ROUGH CUTT concluding their set with a performance of "Stars", the song released in 1986 by the organization known as Hear 'N Aid. They were joined on stage by Lita Ford, Ronnie’s cousin David “Rock” Feinstein (The Rods) and Joe Retta (Dio Disciples) amongst others. The rainy forecast didn’t deter fans from attending the event. There was a live auction and gourmet food trucks provided by Slammin’ Sliders, Greenz on Wheels, G’s Tacos, and Archie’s Ice Cream. Sponsors lending their continued support to the RIDE FOR RONNIE are Harley-Davidson of Glendale, Law Tigers and Ninkasi Brewing Company. New sponsors to the event this year include Bigg Time Entertainment and LA’s rock radio station, 95.5 KLOS. Wendy Dio along with Dr. Sandeep Kapoor presented a check in the amount of $25,000 to Dr. David Wong of the UCLA School of Dentistry. They have been investigating the development of a non-invasive saliva test that will help in determining early detection of cancer. The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (www.diocancerfund.org) began in 2010 as a tribute to the memory of the late voice behind Black Sabbath, Rainbow and his own band Dio after Ronnie lost his hard-fought battle with gastric cancer. Since that time, the Dio Cancer Fund has raised more than $1 million for cancer research and education. Now in its ninth year, M3 brought out not only the ’80s glam and metal bands it’s known for, but a first time appearance by North of the Border rockers Loverboy as well as Saturday’s headliner, the newly reformed RATT. Friday started with a special acoustic performance by Lita Ford. Lita also spent her time as an MC on Saturday along with Eddie Trunk who was on hand for the entire weekend. Station followed right after Lita’s short set. Baton Rouge and Dangerous Toys were next up. Faster Pussycat then took the stage for its set without singer Taime Downe who was hospitalized with pneumonia. Drummer Chad Stewart and bassist Danny Nordahl sang a few songs to begin the show. Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys), Share Ross (Vixen) and Ted Poley (Danger Danger) all stepped in and helped the band finish out their set. Winger was next on with one of the best performances of the entire weekend. Loverboy then followed with a string of MTV era hits. Local Maryland favorites KIX finished the night off with their brand of good old fashioned hard drivin’ rock and roll. A new, permanent second stage, The Chrysalis was added in the Symphony Woods area. It’s also meant to be used not only during music festivals, but also community and cultural arts events. The bands performing on the new stage included 1 Nite Stand, Korupt, Junkyard, Vain, Bang Tango, Vixen and Dokken. Junkyard put in a masterful performance highlighted by original guitarist Brian Baker sitting in on their song “Hollywood” to end their set. The Pavilion stage was filled with a full day of musical mayhem featuring classic acts Rhino Bucket, Mitch Malloy, Autograph, Danger Danger, Jack Russell’s Great White, Warrant, Cinderella’s Tom Keifer and RATT. The return of RATT to M3 brought back their classic lineup of Stephen Pearcy, Juan Croucier and Warren DeMartini. Joining them were guitarist Carlos Cavazo and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso. They were the most anticipated band of the day and did not disappoint. All the bands performing on both days gave the crowd what they came for a great time hearing the music that most of us grew listening to.
A two day music festival filled with some of the ’80s Best Rock Bands, M3 Festival has become the cornerstone for the scene that will never die. In 2018 the M3 Festival will be celebrating its Tenth Anniversary, so look out for some great things to be happening. Richie Kotzen is currently touring in support of his latest release Salting Earth. The CD was officially released on April 14th. (Available here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/salting-earth/id1210901193) He also performed several new songs off the album in concert. His performance was fantastic as he captivated the audience with his unique guitar playing and outstanding melodic vocal style. Kotzen's playing is well known, more widely now due to the breakout success of the Winery Dogs, but among guitarists he's been an icon since his 1990 Fever Dream debut recording. What many didn't know until the Winery Dogs is that he's an equally impressive singer and front man. Fronting the power trio of either his solo band or the Winery Dogs is a perfect vehicle that puts him where his entire career seems to have been aiming. His hook-filled, genre-bending songwriting and powerhouse soulful vocals are a treat to hear live. For the past seven years, Richie’s band has included Dylan Wilson on Bass and Mike Bennett on Drums. The fact that Richie, Dylan and Mike have been playing together for almost seven years is very evident. They are solid in their performance and compliment Richie’s style of playing flawlessly. Overall, it was a stellar performance, by one of the best guitar players I've ever seen. His unique techniques and style made for a very entertaining show. Here you have Michael Anthony, former bassist for Van Halen whom Sammy has known and played alongside for 30 years, guitarist Vic Johnson who’s been playing with Hagar since the mid 90’s, and veteran drummer Jason Bonham of rock royalty.
At 9:00 pm Eddie Money came out to a packed house introduced the band. They started off the set with a Hagar staple “There’s Only One Way to Rock” the show was off to a flying start. Bonham then pounded out a familiar drumbeat to all Hagar fans and thus began the Montrose hit “Rock Candy.” Hagar, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, nailed the vocals all night long. Not bad for a man who will be celebrating his 70th birthday this October. In addition to a stirring rendition of “Good Times Bad Times’” the band covered the Zeppelin tunes “When the Levee Breaks” and “Rock and Roll.” Other songs served as road markers for Hagar’s four decades including “Right Now,” “Poundcake,” and “Why Can’t This Be Love” from his time as lead singer for Van Halen. Chickenfoot was represented with “Bigfoot” and “I Can’t Drive 55,” “Little White Lies” and “Heavy Metal” from the solo albums. The set ended with “Mas Tequila,” a tune by Sammy and the Wabos, where he urged the crowd to change the name to “Mas Mezquila."
